‘Batwoman’ Star Javicia Leslie Teases Ryan Wilder Joining The Arrowverse

Javicia Leslie will become the first woman of color to embody the iconic character Batwoman in the upcoming season of the CW series. This historic moment in superhero history is certainly something that weighs heavily on the actress as she prepares to don the classic cowl. During the BAWSE Females of Color Within the DC Universe Panel at DC Fandome, Leslie revealed her excitement for her version of Batwoman to join fellow DC superheroes in the Arrowverse.
“Already, Batwoman stands out because she doesn’t have a superpower,” Leslie explained. “Everything she uses is her intelligence and Luke and her physical strength. So, I do look forward to playing that part from a Ryan perspective, this street kid’s perspective. From a person that saw these superheroes growing up. Because that was also really important for Ryan to see Batwoman be an out lesbian, to have her superhero role model to look up to. So, to not only fill those shoes but to be with the ones that have already been doing it, I think that that’s going to be a lot for her. It’s going to be a culture shock for her, but I also think it’s really cool.”

Leslie will be taking over the titular role after Ruby Rose announced her surprise departure in May. Leslie has some familiarity with Arrowverse executive producer Greg Berlanti as his production company, Berlanti Productions, produced God Friended Me for two seasons on CBS.
The CW and WarnerMedia are committed to the show’s LGBTQ representation. The new character will likely be affected by Kane’s work as Batwoman and decide to take up the mantle. However, the move would be unprecedented. Batwoman is a very recognizable DC character and placing a version not previously seen in the comics in their own series could cause a stir among fans. Like many other series, Batwoman season one halted early due to the coronavirus pandemic. The show had a planned 22-episode season, but Episode 20 served as its season finale.
Batwoman will return in January 2021.
