Oscar Winner Matthew A. Cherry To Direct Comedy Heist Film ‘The Come Up’

Filmmaker Matthew A. Cherry went viral recently after he virtually called his shot. A tweet from 2012 reads “I’m gonna be nominated for an Oscar one day. Already claiming it.” At this year’s Academy Awards, Cherry’s beautiful short film Hair won the Oscar for Best Animated Short. As first reported by Deadline, Cherry will direct his next feature-length picture from New Line Cinema titled The Come Up.
Per the initial report, the comedy heist will be like a hybrid between Friday and Oceans 11. Cherry will helm the project with a screenplay by When They See Us scribe Michael Starrbury. However, the story idea originally came from Coming 2 America star Jermaine Fowler. Moreover, the ensemble cast will include the aforementioned Fowler along with Get Out‘s Lil Rel Howery and twin comedians Keith and Kenneth Lucas. Moreover, John Rickard (Rampage) is on-board to produce the feature.

Recently, Warner Bros announced the signing of Cherry to a multi-year first-look deal where he will create, develop, and produce new material for a variety of platforms. Additionally, The Come Up is a part of the expansive deal and will reportedly begin production early next year.
