‘Atomic Blonde 2’ Reportedly In Early Development At Netflix

In 2017, Charlize Theron starred in the action thriller Atomic Blonde. Directed by John Wick‘s David Leitch, the film went on to earn $100.1 million at the worldwide box office. With that success in mind, it was only a matter of time before expanding the film’s universe was explored. According to a new report from Discussing Film, a sequel is in the works at Netflix.
Based on the 2012 graphic novel The Coldest City, Atomic Blonde focuses on a spy in search of a list of double agents being smuggled on the eve of the collapse of the Berlin Wall. Theron starred in the film as a top-level MI6 field agent Lorraine Broughton. Additionally, the ensemble was rounded out by A-listers like James McAvoy, Bill Skarsgard, and John Goodman. The film was generally well-received with an approval rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film was released theatrically in 2017 by Focus Features. However, director David Leitch revealed there was interest in collaborating with a streaming service for the sequel during an interview last year.
“I think there is still talk of a sequel, he said. “A streaming service is into it. I don’t know all the details. I was a work-for-hire on that movie, but at the end of the day, Kelly McCormick – my producing partner and my wife – she will be involved, I’m sure, as a producer. That’s how I got the gig in the first place. We’ll see.”
Per the initial report, Netflix will develop the film alongside producer Kelly McCormick (Deadpool 2). At this time, no screenwriter is attached to pen the script and plot details are unknown. However, Charlize Theron will likely return to reprise her role. The South African-born actress was last seen in 2019’s award-winning film Bombshell. Next, she will appear in the upcoming film F9, in theaters April 2021.
