Chris Evans has been a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since he first donned the stars and stripes in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. However, following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Captain America is an old man unable to fight the good fight anymore. This will subsequently spell the end of Evans’ run in the MCU.
Recently, during a conversation with co-star Scarlett Johansson for Variety, the actor revealed exactly what it would take for him to reprise the role he made famous.
When asked if he would come back, Evans had this to say.
“You never say never. I love the character. I don’t know. It’s not a hard no, but it’s not an eager yes either,” Evans says. “There are other things that I’m working on right now. I think Cap had such a tricky act to stick the landing, and I think they did a really nice job letting him complete his journey. If you’re going to revisit it, it can’t be a cash grab. It can’t be just because the audience wants to be excited. What are we revealing? What are we adding to the story? A lot of things would have to come together.”
After Johansson mentions that she believed Cap had a fitting swan song in Avengers: Endgame, Evans agreed.
“It’d be a shame to sour that,” he says. “I’m very protective of it. It was such a precious time, and jumping onto the movie was a terrifying prospect to me. I said no a bunch of times, and there’s a million and one ways it could have gone wrong. It almost feels like maybe we should let this one sit.”
The end of the fourth Avengers film saw Steve Rogers go back in time to return the Infinity Stones. However, he did not come back as his super-soldier self as expected. He stayed in the past and formed a new timeline where he lived happily ever after with Agent Peggy Carter. The now 100-year old Cap passed the infamous shield on to The Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie. Disney+ will explore the aftermath of that decision in the upcoming series The Falcon & The Winter Soldier.
It doesn’t seem like Evans will be returning to the MCU anytime soon. However, within the pages of Marvel Comics, Steve Rogers was drained of his super-soldier serum and turned into an old man for a period of time. He was still involved heavily in a bevy of storylines.
