Everyone’s favorite Academy Award-winning animated film will be swinging back into our universe sooner than expected. This afternoon, Sony and the official Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Twitter had been teasing an announcement that has finally dropped: A sequel to the 2018 smash hit will be releasing on April 8, 2022.

This sequel should come at no surprise, considering the huge success of the first film last Christmas. Though it has also been rumored that an all Spider-Women movie spinoff movie starring Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy is in the works.
Fans are hoping for more female characters (Jessica Drew’s Spiderwoman, especially) will be introduced in the upcoming sequel. Additionally, the post-credits scene of the first installment featured a cameo from Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099, voiced by Oscar Issac. That moment led many to believe that he would play a big part in a potential sequel, which is finally coming to fruition.
Though no new characters have officially been announced, Sony Animation has a plethora of Spider-characters to choose from in their multiverse adventure. With the SUMC ready to kick into high gear in the coming years, don’t be shocked if Jared Leto’s Morbius or Tom Hardy’s Venom sneak their way into the film.
