Tessa Thompson & Lupita Nyong’o Among Shortlist For Catwoman Role In ‘The Batman’

While Warner Bros. is currently in talks with Jonah Hill for The Batman, director Matt Reeves has been looking to cast a woman of color for Catwoman. According to our friends at Geeks WorldWide, Reeves has narrowed his list down to five contenders.
Lupita Nyong’o and Tessa Thompson headline the shortlist for the role of Selina Kyle, otherwise known as Catwoman. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Alexandra Shipp, and Logan Browning are also in the running to appear in the upcoming Batman film.
Nyong’o and Thompson are both veterans of the MCU, with Nyong’o starring in Black Panther as Nakia and Thompson appearing in both Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame as the Asgardian warrior Valkyrie. Shipp, on the other hand, played Storm in the last two X-Men films under the Fox/Marvel brand.

Warner Bros. is familiar with Mbatha-Raw as she was a contender for the role of Dinah Lance/Black Canary in Birds of Prey, which eventually went to Jurnee Smollett-Bell. Mbatha-Raw is best known for her role in Beyond The Lights and the live-action Disney film, Beauty & the Beast.
Browning currently starts in the Netflix drama series, Dear White People. It was recently announced that the show had been renewed for its fourth, and final, season on the streaming service.
When Reeves fills the role of Catwoman, the actress would be joining the likes of Robert Pattinson, who will play Bruce Wayne/Batman while Jeffrey Wright will portray Commissioner Jim Gordon. Once the deal with Hill is completed, it is thought he will be playing either the Penguin or the Riddler.
