Awkwafina & Jacob Tremblay Rumored For Roles In Live-Action ‘The Little Mermaid’

Following the news that Melissa McCarthy has boarded the live-action The Little Mermaid as Ursula, a new rumor has two up-and-coming stars potentially joining the cast. According to entertainment journalist Kris Tapley, Disney is eyeing Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina for voice roles in the upcoming project.
Tapley reports that the studio wants Tremblay to voice Flounder, Ariel’s best friend, who regularly accompanies her on adventures despite his cowardly attitude. Awkwafina is reportedly up to voice Scuttle, a seagull who appeared as a supporting character in the 1989 animated film.
Nora Lum, known by the stage name Awkwafina, made her film breakthrough last year with her roles in Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians. Her other credits include Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, Storks, and The Simpsons. Later this year, Awkwafina will appear alongside Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart in Jumanji: The Next Level.

Tremblay burst onto the scene with his breakout performance as Jack Newsome in 2015s Room. In the years since, the 12-year-old actor has appeared in films such as Wonder, The Book of Henry, and The Predator. Tremblay stars in The Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep, which releases in November.
Rob Marshall, best known for directing Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides and last year’s Mary Poppins Returns, will helm the live-action The Little Mermaid for Disney. Hamilton architect Lin-Manuel Miranda is attached to create new music for the project that will accompany hits from the original film.
