As first reported by Deadline, Disney is looking to continue a project that began at 20th Century Fox. The studio has tapped Taika Waititi to write and direct an animated adaptation of Flash Gordon.
Waititi, the director of 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, has been one of Hollywood’s most sought after commodities since reinventing the God of Thunder within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is currently in post-production for the film Jojo Rabbit, which tells the tale of a boy and his bumbling imaginary friend Adolf Hitler, played by Waititi himself.
Fans have been dreaming of Waititi’s future with Disney since 2017 and this project will only strengthen that relationship. Waititi has also been on the set The Mandalorian, the Star Wars TV show set to premiere on Disney+, as a director and voice actor.
Flash Gordon, is a space opera that began as a serial comic strip in 1934 and has been adapted into animated and live-action shows since 1954. The live-action film, which premiered in 1980 and starred Sam J. Jones, has long been a cult classic among movie fans. Fox has actually been attempting to produce a new version of Flash Gordon for a number of years, going back and forth between live-action and animation as well as attaching filmmakers like Matthew Vaugh (X-Men: First Class) and Julius Avery (Overlord).
