Chris Hemsworth Auditioned To Play Gambit In ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’

Chris Hemsworth’s career could’ve been very different. The 35-year-old actor revealed in an interview with Variety that he was up for the role of Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Duke in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
Hemsworth discussed how losing out on those major roles was disappointing at the time, but ultimately set him down the path that allowed him to play Thor in the MCU. “I got very close to Gambit in the Wolverine X-Men movies. At the time I was upset,” Hemsworth said. “I was running out of money. But if I played either of those characters, I wouldn’t have been able to play Thor.”

Taylor Kitsch, best known for his work on Friday Night Lights, ended up being cast as Remy LaBeau in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, while Magic Mike star Channing Tatum portrayed Duke in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Interestingly enough, Tatum has spent years trying to get a Gambit solo movie off the ground at Fox. The project appears to be dead at this point as Fox transitions all of their Marvel assets over to Disney.
