Zazie Beetz Says ‘Atlanta’ Season 3 Will Begin Filming In September

One of the most original series on TV is on its way back. According to Zazie Beetz, the third season of Atlanta is looking to begin filming in September following an extended delay. During a panel at Puerto Rico Comic Con, attended by FCC, Beetz discussed the return of the hit FX series: “I think last I heard was hopefully we start shooting around September.”
Earlier this year, FX chief John Landgraf revealed at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that the next season of Atlanta was behind schedule. “As you might imagine, Donald Glover is sort of the king of all media, and he just has had an incredibly complicated life. He’s had personal things he’s had to deal with, from injuries to other things I’d rather not say publicly that just have to do not with his personal life but his extended family,” Landgraf explained. “So I think one of the things that is just a reality of television today is you have to wait. We have so many things now that don’t cycle back on a regular basis. … From my standpoint, I wish for the fans as well as for us that we could get everything back on an annual basis but, again, you just have to make a decision about quantity over quality at a certain point — and we’re just erring on the side of quality.”

The cast of the series has kept busy during the delay: Brian Tyree Henry has appeared in Widows and the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse, Lakeith Stanfield will have a role in Rian Johnson’s upcoming Knives Out, and Donald Glover has continued his musical success and will voice the lead role in Jon Favreau’s The Lion King. As for Beetz, she will star alongside Joaquin Phoenix in Joker later this year.
