DC Had To Ask Marvel Permission To Use Zazie Beetz In ‘Joker’

It appears that the Marvel and DC rivalry isn’t as intense as some would like to think. Zazie Beetz revealed that the DC film division at Warner Bros. had to ask Marvel permission to allow her to appear in Todd Philips’ Joker movie later this year. During a panel at Puerto Rico Comic Con, attended by FCC, Beetz discussed the negotiation between the two pop culture juggernauts: “I think DC had to ask Marvel permission if I could be part of the universe.”
The Atlanta star portrayed her first comic book character when she took on the role of Domino in 2018s Deadpool 2. She will now transition to DC as she plays Sophie Dumond, a single mother living on the Lower East Side of New York who catches the eye of Joaquin Phoneix’s Arthur Fleck in Joker.

Beetz is hardly the first actor to cross the superhero universe line. Ben Affleck, Halle Berry, Michael Keaton, Tommy Lee Jones, and Ryan Reynolds are just a few of the names that have appeared in both Marvel and DC movies. Interestingly enough, Beetz’s Deadpool 2 co-star Josh Brolin has portrayed characters in a Fox/Marvel movie, DC movie, and in the MCU. If there’s a superhero acting bingo, surely Brolin has won by now.
