Live-Action ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ Film Rounds Out Cast

Universal’s live-action How to Train Your Dragon film has rounded out its cast with some up-and-coming stars. Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn have joined the cast as Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut, respectively.

Originally a successful children’s book series written by Cressida Cowell, the franchise spawned a trilogy of animated feature films from DreamWorks Animation. The story follows a young Viking named Hiccup who wishes to become a dragon slayer and gain the admiration of his village. But after a run-in with a rare Night Fury, he befriends the dragon and finds that Vikings and dragons could be more than enemies.

Dennison is best known for his roles in Deadpool 2 and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. More recently, he appeared in Godzilla vs. Kong. Howell has been in the Netflix series Bodies and will soon appear in the BBC series Nightsleeper. James already has a rather impressive filmography as he is set to appear in Ariana Grande’s Wicked, Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, and the upcoming Masters of the Air series. Lastly, Trevaldwyn has appeared in Judd Apatow’s The Bubble and BBC America’s Ten Percent.

The newcomers join Mason Thames and Nico Parker, who were previously cast as Hiccup and Astrid. In addition, they will be joined by Nick Frost as Gobber and Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast, reprising his role from the original animated films.

Dean DeBlois, the filmmaker behind the original animated trilogy, will return as writer, director, and producer of the new adaptation. Development on the film is already underway, and a release date of March 14, 2025, has been set.
