Ralph Macchio & Jackie Chan Join Sony’s New ‘Karate Kid’ Film

We are going back to the Dojo with Daniel LaRussa and Mr. Han. As stated in our article last year, a new installment to the Karate Kid universe is being made. The film was announced in August of last year, and now we know more.
According to THR, Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan will be reprising their roles in the new installment of the franchise. Macchio was introduced as Daniel LaRussa in the 1984 debut of the Karate Kid franchise. The film was a smash hit that spawned three sequels, a soft reboot, and a TV for YouTube/Netflix titled Cobra Kai. Cobra Kai features several characters from the original film as adults who lead a new legion of karate-loving youth to understand the way of Mr. Miyagi. Unfortunately, Pat Morita, who portrayed Mr. Miyagi is no longer with us.
The new film will be directed by Johnathan Entwistle who has done teen dramas I’m Not OK with This and End of the F**king World, both were hits for Netflix. He’s also in line to direct The Lost Boys and Power Rangers reboots.

The film’s screenplay hails from Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit, Goosebumps 2). The story will be East Coast-based and involve a child of Chinese descent who uses martial arts to navigate through his current situation.
Chan and Macchio are two of the most recognizable faces and names in Hollywood. Both of these actors are icons in their own right. Whether it’s Rush Hour, Rumble in the Bronx, or any of the many martial arts films, you know it’s Chan. While Macchio doesn’t have the elaborate list of films that Chan has, he was an important piece of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders. He also starred in My Cousin Vinny and has one of the better cameos in HBO’s Entourage.
A Global search has kicked off to find the next Karate Kid. The search is being led by Sony Pictures and Entwistle. This is an extraordinary idea, and we will be watching to see who lands the role.
The newest installment of Karate Kid looks to land around the holidays next year with a filming start in the early months of spring.
