Kenneth Branagh Reportedly Helming Live-Action ‘Gargoyles’ Film

A cult favorite animated series may soon find itself on the big screen. According to The Belfast Telegraph, director Sir Kenneth Branagh is set to direct a live-action theatrical adaptation of the 1990’s animated series Gargoyles.
The series was produced by Walt Disney Television Animation from 1994 to 1997. The show followed a series of gargoyle warriors who turn to stone during the day. After spending a thousand years petrified, the gargoyles reawakened in modern-day New York City, where they become its secret protectors.

A live-action film adaptation has been discussed since the show aired, but only a few early screenplay drafts were produced. Jordan Peele was once in discussion regarding the project as he pitched his version to Disney in 2018, however, it was not picked up. Now it seems Branagh is attached, but with the ongoing WGA and SAG, it will be some time before any official announcements are made.
Branagh is no stranger to Disney, having directed 2015’s Cinderella and 2020’s Artemis Fowl for the studio. Most recently, he helmed Death on the Nile and reprised his role as Hercule Poirot from Murder on the Orient Express. His upcoming film, A Haunting in Venice, will be released later this year.
