Created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson in 1971, the character first appeared in House of Secrets #92. Originally conceived as a scientist named Alec Holland who was transformed into a plant monster, he was eventually reconceived as a plant monster that believed he was a man. The character is the defender of the Parliament of Trees, an elemental community that rules over Earth’s plant life through the Green. Since his debut, the Swamp Thing has become a major character in the DC Universe and has gone on to serve on the Justice League Dark.
The Ford v Ferrari director teased the news Tuesday night after sharing a photo of Swamp Thing on social media. Gunn later shared the post online, which suggested talks had already begun. Mangold is currently preparing for his next project, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, to release this May.
