The live-action Your Name adaptation has found its director. According to Variety, Carlos López Estrada has been tapped to helm the film.
Based on the 2016 anime film of the same name from Makoto Shinkai. The movie follows two teens from different areas that begin to swap bodies. As a disaster approaches, they journey to meet and change the future. López Estrada is writing the current script for the film, while Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Eric Heisserer completed an earlier version.
J.J. Abrams is set to produce the film through his Bad Robot production company alongside Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen, with Genki Kawamura. Toho will distribute the movie in Japan, while Paramount will release it in the U.S. and other regions.
This is now the third filmmaker announced to direct the film, as Marc Webb originally signed on to helm the film in 2019. In 2020, Webb departed the project, and Lee Isaac Chung took over as both writer and director until he left in 2021, citing scheduling issues.
López Estrada is an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker best known for his film Blindspotting. He recently helmed the animated Disney picture Raya and the Last Dragon. He is currently developing a live-action adaptation of Disney’s Robin Hood.
