Angelina Jolie To Portray Opera Singer Maria Callas In Pablo Larraín’s ‘Maria’
Pablo Larraín recently turned heads with his Kristen Stewart-starring Princess Diana biopic Spencer. Up next, the filmmaker will tell the story of another iconic figure in history. According to Variety, Larraín is enlisting Angelina Jolie for a new film titled Maria.
The film will serve as a biographical retelling of the life and legacy of American-born Greek soprano opera singer Maria Callas. Larraín will reunite with his Spencer screenwriter Steven Knight, who is penning the script. In a statement accompanying the initial report, Jolie expresses how important this film is to her.
“I take very seriously the responsibility to Maria’s life and legacy. I will give all I can to meet the challenge. Pablo Larraín is a director I have long admired. To be allowed the chance to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight, is a dream,” said Jolie.
Maria Callas was one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. Born in Manhattan, New York City, to Greek immigrant parents, her musical talents led to her being hailed as La Divina (The Divine One).
Angelina Jolie is the recipient of numerous accolades, including an Academy Award and three Golden Globe Awards. Most recently, the cinematic icon starred in Those Who Wish Me Dead on HBO Max as well as joined the MCU as Thena in Eternals. Up next, Jolie will lend her voice talent to Kung Fu Panda 4 as she reprises her role as Tigress within the franchise.
