Wes Anderson To Direct Roald Dahl Adaptation For Netflix

As far as filmmakers with a penchant for the otherwordly come, Wes Anderson is the crème de la crème. There’s simply no end to the creator’s earnest strangeness, so it’s only fitting that he’s now lined up to revisit the work of one of the most softhearted oddities in literature.
According to a report from Daily Mail Entertainment Columnist Baz Bamigboye, Anderson is lined up to direct an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. While the famed novelist is often noted for his work in children’s fiction, Henry Sugar is an outlier in his discography as it was written for an older audience of readers. The original text is a collection of seven short stories, with the most notable being Henry Sugar‘s tale, one of a gambler’s extraordinary run-in with a sightless man. At the moment, it is unknown if Anderson will adapt all seven shorts or just Henry Sugar.

However, the lead role of Sugar will be played by Benedict Cumberbatch, according to Bamigboye. While the rest of the filmmaking world took some heavy hits to the chin in 2021, Cumberbatch’s year earned him praise and box office galore. His performance as a sinister ranch-owner in Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog has him pegged for award’s season love, while his return to the character of Doctor Strange in Spider-Man: No Way Home helped pave the way for the film’s record-breaking performance.
As for Anderson, Henry Sugar marks his first directorial effort in partnership with Netflix and his second adaptation of a Roald Dahl property; the first came in 2009 with the stop-motion adaptation of Fantastic Mr. Fox, which earned critical applause but diminishing returns at the box office.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is slated to begin filming in London. It does not have an official release date at this time.
