The highly anticipated comic book film, The Batman, is already receiving the spinoff treatment for HBO Max and it will see its lead villain return to power. According to Variety, Collin Farrell has officially signed on to reprise his role as Penguin in the upcoming streaming series.
The spinoff is based on Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman, with Robert Pattinson starring as the caped crusader. Farrell will first portray the iconic villain in the film releasing on March 4, 2022. Reportedly, the spinoff will focus on Penguin’s rise to power within Gotham City. The After Yang star was not confirmed to return until now, despite this series being reported to be in development this past September.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. producer Lauren LeFranc is on board to write the series. Alongside her, The Batman director Matt Reeves and the film’s producer Dylan Clark are also returning to executive produce the series. If the series continues to develop, it will be the second HBO Max spinoff based on The Batman film. Warner Bros. has previously announced a drama series set in the Gotham City Police Department. Additionally, Joe Barton will serve as the series showrunner. With multiple attempts at a consistent cinematic franchise, this is the studios’ latest effort to create a Batman universe across its platforms.
HBO Max has had quite a competitive year as a streamer with its superhero content. Its investments in comic book series continue to grow, the upcoming The Suicide Squad spinoff Peacemaker starring John Cena amongst them. Also arriving at HBO Max are Greg Berlanti’s Green Lantern series and J.J. Abrams’ Justice League Dark. Additionally, director Angel Manuel Soto’s Blue Beetle movie has been greenlit as an HBO Max exclusive film.
