‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Ep. 108 – ‘Your Next Life Could Be So Much Happier’ Review – ‘A Dark and Twisted Ending’

Conclusions can easily make or break a show, especially in a murder mystery when you want a really good reveal. Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Friday the 13th are just a few horror films that do that. You have to build up, create tension, and create a valuable story in order for the conclusion to be worth it. Luckily, Sara Goodman and her team over at Amazon Studios have done that with the I Know What You Did Last Summer series.
The story for the show was similar to the original film, but with a twist. Instead of an old fisherman getting run over by teens. It was a twin Allison (Madison Iseman) hit by her twin Lennon (Iseman). The group of friends Margot (Brianne Tju), Dylan (Ezekiel Goodman), Riley (Ashley Moore), and Johnny (Sebastian Amoruso) hide the evidence and claim Allison committed suicide. The even bigger twist was that Allison was still alive, and it was indeed Lennon who was dead. The kids go off after graduation and swear to secrecy. The only ones knowing the truth were Allison and her father Bruce (Bill Heck).
We see that somebody knows what happened last summer and they begin to stalk the OG crew when Lennon returns back to the island. Sheriff Lyla (Fiona Rene) has to do an investigation and figure out who is causing havoc on her island. After several deaths, some really insane reveals, and an immense amount of stress on viewers… We finally get our big reveal. Was it worth the wait? Yes. Was it obvious? To some, maybe, but for me? I was clueless.

Logan Kibens – who’s been at the reigns for several episodes – directed the season finale, and Goodman wrote the script as she had done for the first two episodes. Goodman finally tied her story together with a very twisted knot. Kibens got his cast to do some amazing work, and the entire show just meshed well together. They left no plotholes, no confusion – well, maybe just a little – and they give the viewers what they wanted. Pure and head-on chaos.
Iseman should at least get an Emmy Nomination for her acting. Playing twins with very distinct and different personalities has to be very hard. One is just a completely messed up and soulless individual, and the other is just a lonely soul that has no intention of being great. The rest of the actors all put on really good performances as well. Tju’s character Brianne has several problems from her eating disorder to mental health. Goodman’s Ezekiel character is a very loving but flawed individual. Moore’s the local opioid dealer, and she seems cool but underneath has her own issues,
We can talk about these actors and their performances all day. Heck plays a simply a torn and broken father. The setting of the Pacific Islands is a beautiful setting for such a brutal story. The deaths in the show are all worth the wait. It’s just a very compact and easy-to-follow story. Once you get to the end it all makes sense. The conclusion fits perfectly, and you definitely get a definitive ending as a viewer.
I haven’t read the book so I do not know how it differs from that, but this is a much more riveting take on the source material than the movie. It takes all things relevant in the time of its creation and uses them to steer its story. It’s not things going on in the world, but it takes social media and the rise of the influencer. Goodman and her writers, directors, and producers knew what they were doing. They executed their story perfectly and gave us a new series to enjoy. – Rascal F. Kennedy
