Fresh off the awards season success of her directorial debut One Night in Miami…, Regina King has been tapped for yet another project. This time, it’s for Legendary Entertainment’s feature adaptation of Image Comics’ “Bitter Root”.
Deadline reports King has closed a deal with Legendary to direct and produce the live-action adaptation of the critically acclaimed supernatural comics series. She is also tied to produce alongside Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, Reina King, and Sev Ohanian. The draft is currently being rewritten by Bryan Edward Hill, who is also set to adapt Power Rangers for eOne and Hasbro.
Created by the minds behind Marvel’s “Powerman and Iron Fist” David F. Walker and Sanford Greene alongside indie comics veteran Chuck Brown, “Bitter Root” is an action adventure filled with monsters, chaos, and dysfunctional family drama. Set during the 1920s Harlem Renaissance, the story follows an African-American family of formerly prestigious monster hunters that end up having to defend New York City from a force of unimaginable evil. As Image Comics puts it, “The Sangerye Family must heal the wounds of the past and move beyond their differences… or sit back and watch a force of unimaginable evil ravage the human race.”.
The first issue of the ongoing series is available to read for free here!
