Obi-Wan Kenobi: Who’s Who In The Disney+ Series

Obi-Wan Kenobi starts production very soon, and as such, we got the official casting list for the show. Such an impressive cast list took the internet by storm, and it brought up a “who’s who,” or “that person’s playing a new character”. And it got me thinking. We’re (in-universe) 10 years after Revenge of the Sith. Can we put a name to all these new faces we have? This is just for fun, and tying into the existing canon I know of, so please keep that in mind!
Let’s start with the obvious characters. Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Bonnie Piese and Joel Edgerton are all returning to the Star Wars universe to reprise their roles as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, Beru and Owen Lars, respectively. It all makes sense with what we’ve heard so far about the plot. The Lars’ being present can help lead into telling us more of why Owen hates Ben Kenobi so much. Kumail Nanjiani could also be playing a familiar Tatooine character, Anakin Skywalker’s best friend Kitster Chanchani Banai. But he also doesn’t have to, and while the show is only six episodes, I think that’s too little a role for him to have depending on how they play it out.
In terms of who the women could be playing — Indira Varma, or Simone Kessell — I would say either could play Satine in flashbacks. Simone is a relatively unknown actress coming in, but the Star Wars platform is a great opportunity for her to become a breakout star. I believe we’ll see Satine in this series. Mainly because I don’t think Obi-Wan has gotten over her death in The Clone Wars Season 5. However, while I think Varma or Kessell could play Satine, I’d really love to see Indira as a passionate Rebel or Inquisitor. Realistically she’d make a fantastic Asajj Ventress, but I want her in every episode. While I do think we could see Ventress, I don’t think it’ll be for more than one episode.
Moses Ingram so far is the only one who has teased something related to her character, saying on her Instagram, “I play with lightsabers”. So she could be an Inquisitor, but she could also be a character we already know of. The Twitterverse was a storm with saying she could be playing a younger Ahsoka, but I think that’s not on the radar. Rosario Dawson could easily transition into a younger Ahsoka with the extensive costume design. The inclusion of multiple lightsabers makes me think she won’t be an inquisitor; despite the fact that you could say the double-bladed lightsaber is technically multiple lightsabers. I think she’s got the perfect attitude for Ventress, which could play well into the guilt Kenobi may be experiencing.
Realistically, when it comes to the remaining four cast members we know of, I have no clue who they could be playing. I have some sort of idea of who I want them to play. But I’m just hoping for some new characters. We definitely do not need to put in a bunch of Easter eggs for characters we’ve seen before. This is a galaxy far far away, not just one planet.
But this is a piece about who I think they’re playing, so I’ll go into who I want them to be. First off, I need Rupert Friend to be a rude Imperial Officer. His portrayal of Wickham in Pride and Prejudice just will never let me see him in a positive light. I’ve only seen O’Shea Jackson Jr. in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but I want him to play a friendly character. I’m really hoping Dexter Jettster makes an appearance, but I do think Jackson needs a bigger role than that.
Now, we come to the last two actors that have been revealed, Sung Kang and Benny Safdie. I can see Safdie playing some sort of Slicer/Underworld character Kenobi and his companions need to reach out to. From my understanding, he typically plays off-the-wall characters. Based on his directorial portfolio, I think that would be the type of role he’d want to go for. Kang I’ve only seen in the Fast and Furious movies, and we are going to Tatooine where we’ve seen pod-racing happen. But that would be a little cliché in my book. I would love to see the Imperial corps further diversify from what we’ve seen. But I do love him as an actor, so also would love to see him be a good guy.
That concludes this adventure in who could be who in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show, headed to Disney+ in 2022. Again, please remember this is all in good fun, and just an idea bred out of some Twitter discussions. –Katie Rentschler
