The Spy Kids franchise will receive a new entry in the form of a relaunch. According to Deadline, Skydance Media is looking to reimagine the franchise alongside Spyglass Media Group.
Robert Rodriguez will return to write and direct the next film, which will focus on a multicultural family. Skydance recently became intrigued with Spyglass’ Spy Kids IP as it has looked to diversity its slate. The former will serve as the lead studio and oversee the project’s development and production, while Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Peter Oillataguerre will executive produce.
The original Spy Kids films focused on Carmen and Juni Cortez, who became spies to save their secret-agent parents from danger. The original film was a massive success financially, leading to three sequel films.
Rodriguez’s newest project, We Can Be Heroes, recently launched on Netflix, which saw the return of his characters from The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. He recently wrapped on his upcoming thriller Hypnotiq starring Ben Affleck. The filmmaker is also set to begin filming The Mandalorian spinoff The Book of Boba Fett.
