During Thursday’s Investor call, it was announced that the Disney Animated film, Raya and the Last Dragon will be released on Disney+ on the same day as the theatrical release.
The film will be a part of the Disney+ Premiere Access when released. Mulan was the first film to be released using this model; where Disney+ subscribers can pay an additional $30 for the film that they can watch at any point. This announcement comes just one week after Warner Brothers announced all of their 2021 films will be released in conjunction with HBO Max. However, the Warner Bros. library won’t require additional payment.
Kelly Marie Tran was cast as the titular role and had this to say about the character:
She is someone who is technically a princess but I think that what’s really cool about this project, about this character, specifically is that everyone’s trying to flip the narrative on what it means to be a princess,” Tran says. “Raya is totally a warrior. When she was a kid, she was excited to get her sword. And she grows up to be a really badass, gritty warrior and can really take care of herself.”
Tran last appeared on the big screen in Dreamwork’s The Croods: A New Age. Additionally, the actress will next lend her voice talents to the Disney+ show, Monsters at Work.
Raya and the Last Dragon will be released on March 12, 2021.
