Two of the most accomplished performers in cinematic history will reunite for the first time in almost 30 years on Netflix. As first reported by THR, Academy Award winners Denzel Washingon and Julia Roberts will team up and star in the upcoming thriller Leave The World Behind, set to premiere on the streaming service.
The movie will be based on the upcoming novel of the same name penned by Rumaan Alam. The book’s official synopsis describes the story as “keenly attuned to the complexities of parenthood, race, and class.” The plot follows Amanda and Clay as they head-out to a remote-area of Long Island for a vacation with their son and daughter. However, the owners of their vacation house return suddenly one evening after a supposed blackout sweeps New York City. With no TV, internet, or cell phone service, the two families will next have to navigate a tense situation, unsure of what comes next.
The upcoming live-action adaptation will be written and directed by Sam Esmail. Best known for his work on the hit USA Network series Mr. Robot, the filmmaker is a Golden Globe and Emmy nominated filmmaker. Additionally, the upcoming film will be produced by Esmail, Roberts, and Washington alongside Chad Hamilton (Comet).
The legendary Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts continue to add to their already impressive filmographies. Washington will next appear in and produce Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, with Viola Davis. Moreover, Roberts last appeared on the big screen in Peter Hedges’ Ben Is Back. Furthermore, the Pretty Woman actress continuously turns her attention to television projects like HBO’s The Normal Heart and Amazon’s Homecoming.
