‘Doom Patrol’ S2, E4 – “Sex Patrol” Review: “Weird But Wonderful”

Doom Patrol season 2 has started, and if you’re not caught up, make sure you check out last week’s season premiere of three episodes, which we already have a review for here, before proceeding any further into “Sex Patrol.” There are no spoilers below, but better safe than sorry!
“Sex Patrol” is one of those weird episodes of television you have no idea why you love it so much. You just do plain and simple. The good thing is, when you love something, sometimes you don’t have to describe it. When you know, you just know.
In all seriousness, the writing staff on Doom Patrol does a wonderful job. This is a very strange episode, one that usually would leave me running for the hills, but for some reason, I can’t help but love it. That has to do the most with April Bowlby and Abigail Shapiro’s performances in this episode as Rita and Dorothy, respectively. Both strike such measures of vulnerability in their performances. Rita as she struggles to come to terms with her past, and Dorothy as she comes realizes it’s time to grow up. This is a neat touch, as the episode is focused around the timing of her bedtime. A good counterpart as one part of growing up is always seeing your bedtime go further and further back.
The villain of the week, the Shadowy Mr. Evans, is enormously weird, and creepy, but really plays well to the benefit of Rita’s character development. I love seeing Flex Mentallo (Devan Long) back with the Dannyzens. It was a perfect reminder to accept yourself no matter what’s happening around you.
Rating: 9.5/10
