Spike Lee Teams With HBO For ‘David Byrne’s American Utopia’

This weekend, legendary filmmaker Spike Lee unleashed his latest film Da 5 Bloods to the world via Netflix. In his 10/10 review for the film, Full Circle’s very own Rascal F. Kennedy said “Lee’s storytelling in this film was superb, just as it was in his 2018 film BlacKkKlansman. His pacing is slow but once it gets to where it wants to be, it moves at the perfect speed.” As first reported by THR, Lee’s next big project has already been revealed. The director will next team with HBO to produce a filmed version of the critically acclaimed Broadway show David Byrne’s American Utopia.
The show features the multifaceted Byrne and 11 musical artists from every corner of the world performing songs from his 2018 album American Utopia. Additionally, the performer’s catalog of songs from his solo career and alongside his band Talking Heads is also heavily featured. Lee filmed the show during its run at the Hudson Theatre in New York City. HBO will present the film on its via its premium cable outlet later this year.

David Byrne expressed his excitement to be working with Spike Lee to bring his vision to the homes of millions.
“Spike and I have crossed paths many times over the years, obviously I’m a huge fan and now finally here was an opportunity for us to work together,” said Byrne. “I am absolutely thrilled with the result. The Broadway show was a wonderful challenge as well as an opportunity — it was a joy to perform and, well, best to let the quotes speak for themselves. Thrilled that this show and the subjects it addresses will now reach a wider audience.”
Additionally, Spike Lee added his love for the Broadway show and all of Byrne’s work
“It is my honor and privilege that my art brother, Mr. David Byrne, asked me to join him in concert, to invite me into his magnificent world of American Utopia. And dat’s da ‘once in a lifetime’ truth, Ruth. Ya-dig? Sho-nuff. Peace and love. Be safe.”
