‘Batwoman’ Casting New Lead Character Following Ruby Rose’s Exit

Last month, just one year after Batwoman was ordered to series, star Ruby Rose departed the show. The initial report made it seem like a new actress from the LGBTQ community would step into the role of Kate Kane. However, as first revealed by THR, it appears a new character will take over the starring role in The CW series.
A now-deleted casting notice posted to Reddit originally teased the changing of the guard. According to Decider, a new character named Ryan Wilder will reportedly become the new Batwoman. However, it is unclear whether or not the name is official or used for casting purposes. The original report describes the character as “likable, messy, little goofy mid-20s girl who is about to become Batwoman.”
The CW and WarnerMedia are committed to the show’s LGBTQ representation. The new character will likely be affected by Kane’s work as Batwoman and decide to take up the mantle. However, the move would be unprecedented. Batwoman is a very recognizable DC character and placing a version not previously seen in the comics in their own series could cause a stir among fans.

Like many other series, Batwoman season on halted early due to the coronavirus pandemic. The show had a planned 22-episode season, but Episode 20 served as its season finale. It is unclear if the transition to a new actress would have taken place during those final two episodes or if it would have been pushed back into Season 2.
