‘Star Wars’ Film In Development From ‘Sleight’ Filmmaker

With ‘The Skywalker Saga’ now concluded, Lucasfilm is looking to expand the “Star Wars” universe. Director J.D. Dillard has been hired to develop a new movie via THR.
J.D. Dillard, writer and director of Sleight, has been tapped to direct a new Star Wars film along with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Luke Cage writer, Matt Owen. The duo will break ground on an original story for the studio. As of right now, no other details have been revealed or even a timetable on the film going into production.
It’s also still unknown how the film will be distributed. With the success of The Mandalorian, it’s possible the film will go to the Disney+ streaming service in lieu of a traditional theatrical release.
Disney and Lucasfilm are in an interesting situation at the moment. For the first time since the acquisition, they have no immediate plans for the future. In recent months, we have heard that multiple ‘Star Wars’ films are in development. There’s the trilogy from Star Wars: The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson; as well as a pitch from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. The only planned theatrical release dates are December 2022, December 2024 and December 2026.
