Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s venture into superhero films may feature a heavy-hitter from DC Comics lore. According to Heroic Hollywood, the upcoming Black Adam solo film will see the big screen debut of Doctor Fate.
There have been several iterations of the Doctor Fate character, but the most iconic is Kent Nelson, who was a founding member of the Justice Society of America. While exploring a temple alongside his father, Kent comes across the tomb of Nabu the Wise and reanimates the long-forgotten god. Unfortunately, Kent’s father dies from a mysterious gas inside the ruins, which threatens his life as well. Rather than watch him die, Nabu decides to spare Kent and train him as an agent for the Lords of Order.
While Doctor Fate’s potential appearance in Black Adam would be his movie debut, it won’t be the character’s live-action appearance. A version of Kent Nelson made his way into the ninth season of the Superman origin series Smallville, portrayed by Canadian actor Brent Stait. Doctor Fate has also been a prominent figure in many DC animated projects, including Young Justice, Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Justice League.
Directed by Jungle Cruise helmer Jaume Collet-Serra with a script by Adam Sztykiel, production on Black Adam will begin in July of 2020.
