Rachel Weisz Revealed Multiple Black Widows Appear In ‘Black Widow’

Scarlett Johansson’s first solo outing in the MCU is set to put Black Widow in the spotlight for the first time. However, it seems that she won’t be the only agent that went through the Red Room program. Based on a recent interview with Rachel Weisz, we will see multiple Black Widow operatives appear.
While speaking to IGN, Weisz discussed her character, who we now know to be Melina Vostokoff, aka Iron Maiden. Weisz restated that her character has been through the Black Widow’s Red Room program five times by the time the film starts. She has now revealed that not only are Weisz’s and Florence Pugh’s characters Black Widows but more agents from the program will be featured.
When asked directly how many Black Widows are in the film, Weisz stated;
“There are quite a number… I’m a Black Widow. Scarlet and Florence, there are also quite a lot of other characters that you meet who are also Black Widows.”
It’s evident Marvel will be diving entirely into the mystery of the Red Room and the history of the Black Widow. In the comics, the Red Room was a fictional Soviet training facility that was created to train highly specialized spies, with the two most famous being Romanoff and Belova. The latter was the first operative to replace Romanoff as the second modern Black Widow.
As an agent who lived in the shadow of Romanoff, Melina Vostokoff is a classic villain of hers. With Taskmaster in the picture, it will be interesting to see how the film ties the vast Marvel lore spanning decades in comic history.
Could this mean we will see a new Black Widow join the new Avengers, or will one become an adversary for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes? Let us know in the comments below!
Black Widow hits theaters on May 1, 2020.
The film stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexi Shostakov, O-T Fagbenle, and Rachel Weisz.
