‘Shazam!’ Earns $53 Million In Its Opening Weekend

This week, Warner Bros. and DC can now claim another commercial success on their hands. According to Variety, the latest film from the DC Extended Universe, Shazam!, has managed to earn $53 million domestically in its opening weekend.
In fact, combine that with its advance screening earnings of $3 million, the film has essentially grossed a total of $56 million in the United States alone. This puts the film’s worldwide gross to $158.6 million, which exceeds its $100 million dollar budget. In addition, the film has earned more money this week than competing films such as Dumbo and the newly-released Pet Sematary.
Compared to other DCEU films such as Aquaman and Wonder Woman, the film’s $53 million opening weekend sales are lower than usual. However, given Shazam!‘s $98 million budget, it does not have to have the high viewership to generate profit. Over the course of its theatrical release, it is likely that the profits will be equivalent to its larger-budget counterparts. Only this time, the film’s scope is more akin to mid-budget studio comedies than massive action blockbusters.
