Universal is looking to reboot another of its classic monsters to the modern day, and it seems they already have a director lined up. According to insider Daniel Richtman, Aquaman director James Wan is set to helm a new Creature from the Black Lagoon film.
The original 1954 film, produced by Universal, focused on a group of scientists who encountered a fish-man hybrid in the Amazon. A previous reboot was planned for the studio’s Dark Universe, with a story by Jeff Pinkner and a script from Will Beall. However, the project and the rest of the universe were abandoned after the critical and commercial failure of 2017’s The Mummy.

Universal has not officially confirmed Wan’s involvement in a Creature from the Black Lagoon reboot, and no other creatives have been attached to the project. It should also be noted that the director was previously attached to direct a Frankenstein reboot back in 2020; however, there have been no updates on that project since.
If the film does come to fruition, it will join the studio’s growing Monsterverse, which thus far includes The Invisible Man, its potential sequel, and The Wolfman, starring Christopher Abbott. None of these films are connected; however, they tackle these classic monster characters with a modern take.
