‘Ahsoka’ Episode 7 Recap/Review

This is a spoiler review for episode 7 of Ahsoka “Dreams and Madness.” For last week’s review, click here!
The penultimate episode of LucasFilm’s Ahsoka series is more action-packed than its predecessors, while also progressing the plotline towards the villainous Thrawn reaching his goal of galactic control. However, while the action is high-octane, the latest installment also features a long overdue reunion and some interesting, if not mysterious character developments that fill up the nearly 50-minute runtime and leave the viewers wanting more.
Kicking off the episode is the Senate trial of General Hera Syndulla. After disobeying orders of the New Republic and going forward with her plan to assist Sabine and Ahsoka in their quest to find Ezra and stop Thrawn, Hera is forced to explain herself to the boneheaded Senator Xiano as well as the more steady Chancellor Mothma. However, after the looming threat of Hera being removed from her post, a lovely cameo occurs in the form of C-3PO, who arrives with an urgent message from Senator Leia Organa alleging that she gave Hera the greenlight to assist.
Like previous installments of the Star Wars series on Disney+ have also featured fun cameos like Luke Skywalker and Cad Bane, the inclusion of Leia and her proxy C-3PO carries plenty of weight as her moves, even unseen, show a loyalty to the greater good and strengthens the notion with Star Wars fans that Leia is always on the right side of history in the war between good and evil.

While Hera and Leia battle the bureaucracy of the New Republic, Sabine, and Ezra find themselves in a rare moment of peace as they travel with the adorable space turtles known as Noti that the Jedi has formed a bond with. They catch up on all the things Ezra has missed, including the fall of the Empire following the Battle on Endor, the supposed “death” of Emperor Palpatine, and the fact that Ahsoka has taken Sabine on as her apprentice, much to the surprise of Ezra.
The conversation is brief, but it also highlights Sabine’s apprehension to disclose the full truth to Ezra about how she came to be on the planet of Peridia in an entirely new galaxy. She does not mention Hera’s son Jacen, the looming threat of Thrawn getting back to their home galaxy, or the fact that she thinks Ahsoka was killed by Baylan Skol. While she may be saving face for the mistakes she feels she made, it seems more like she’s attempting to ease Ezra back into things after so many years away from the life he knew. The conversation between two long-lost friends also provides fans of Star Wars Rebels a small update on Zeb, who is apparently training recruits for the New Republic.

However, aside from the heartwarming reunion between Sabine and Ezra, the evergrowing threat of Thrawn grows with every passing minute. Upon realizing that Ahsoka is both alive and the former apprentice of the feared General Anakin Skywalker, Thrawn, ever the militant tactician, changes his tactic a bit and attempts to regain his composure. Thrawn clearly has some sort of control over the Nightsisters who refer to him solely as the Grand Admiral and he uses their power to seemingly fuel his army and use the planet as his own personal chess board. The ultimate showdown between Thrawn, his longtime ally Morgan Elsbeth, and Ahsoka in the upcoming finale is going to feel as important as Dave Filoni and company have made it feel since the Jedi first mentioned the Imperial Admiral back in season two of The Mandalorian.
The latest episode of Ahsoka leaves more questions than answers, leading into just one more final episode. However, the ride so far has continued to give fans the kind of beloved Star Wars lore that has everyone greatly anticipating the conclusion. There is no promise of a second season of Ahsoka, so viewers should enjoy the rollercoaster while they can. Of course, the story being told currently is likely to continue in the already announced film from LucasFilm directed by Dave Filoni that is set to feature characters from the “MandoVerse.” But for now, we march towards an exciting finale next week to see how our heroes (and villains) get back home. – Christian Hubbard
Rating: 9/10
