John McCain Biopic Reportedly In Early Development

One of the most prolific politicians in American history will reportedly receive the biopic treatment. As first revealed by Variety, a movie about the life and times of John McCain, a United States Senator for Arizona from 1987 until his death in 2018, is in the early stages of development.
The rights to the politician’s biography, The Luckiest Man: Life With John McCain, has been acquired by Stampede Ventures. The production company touts classic films like The Land Before Time, Tremors, and City Slickers. The author of the biography, McCain’s political adviser and friend Mark Salter will adapt his book into a script alongside Craig Turk (The Good Wife). Additionally, McCain’s widow Cindy McCain will serve as the biopic’s executive producer. In a statement, McCain talks about the importance of telling her husband’s story.
“John’s story is one of incredible heroism, of serving causes greater than his own self-interest,” Cindy McCain said in a statement. “There is no better time to tell it. I’m excited to share his life and legacy, and know this film will be a tremendous inspiration to people all over the world.”

Before launching his long-standing career as an Arizona Senator, McCain served as a United States Navy officer. During the Vietnam War, McCain was shot down during a bombing mission in October 1967. Suffering serious injuries, McCain was captured and held as a prisoner of war until 1973. During his capture, McCain was tortured suffered wounds that left him with lifelong physical disabilities. Upon his safe release, he retired from the Navy and entered politics. Moreover, McCain’s life hit the mainstream spotlight when he earned the Presidential nomination for the Republican party for the 2008 race. Ultimately, the Senator lost to Barack Obama. In the years since, McCain battled brain cancer and famously opposed his own party and cast the deciding vote against the ACA-repealing American Health Care Act of 2017.
