Sony’s ‘One Punch Man’ Film Eyeing Henry Golding To Play Saitama

Sony Pictures is narrowing down its search for an actor to play Saitama, the strongest hero in the world. According to insider Daniel Richtman, the One Punch Man film is eyeing Henry Golding for the role.

In recent years, One Punch Man has become a household not only in Japan but around the world. It follows the story of Saitama, a superhero who can defeat any opponent with a single punch that seeks to find a worthy opponent after growing bored by a lack of challenges in his fight against evil.

Originating as a webcomic in 2009, the series moved to print in 2012 and saw worldwide sales of over 30 million copies. The series has been met with critical acclaim, having received nominations for an Eisner and a Harvey award. Since that time, One Punch Man has spawned an anime and several video games.

Henry Golding has quickly made a name for himself in Hollywood. Critics and audiences lauded the star’s performance in Crazy Rich Asians, and since then, he has stared in The Gentlemen and is set to play G.I. Joe’s Snake Eyes in an upcoming solo film slated for 2021.

According to Richtman, the studio is also eyeing Chloé Zhao to direct the project. Having directed smaller indie projects, Zhao is slowly making her way into mainstream pictures after boarding Marvel Studios’ Eternals, which will release in 2021.

  1. Sony go watch re anime your saitama is there,u damn fools never leave Americans to do an adaptation OF A JAPANESE ANIME, THEY FUCKING MRUIN EVERYTHING

    1. Btw Henry Golding is Malaysian, which is asian and mixed with British that’s why he looks western, so he is not Americans in any possible way, but I do agree the re anime guy is better

Nooo… bad choice… This guy looks strong. Saitama needs to look like a random Asian dude with no hair.
Sony is missing the point of the source material.

  3. Go watch one punch man live action on you tube. That guy should play Saitama.

    1. This comment here makes the most sense.

  4. Sony must be insane if they think any OPM fans would watch the movie with Henry Golding as Saitama. He isnt a bad actor just a bad choice for the role. I will be so disappointed if he ends up being Saitama, can we start a petition for Henry Golding not to be Saitama

    1. Do you want others to petition that you be sacked from your job? Don’t be so cruel.

  5. At this point I honestly think Max Mittelman (English Dub actor for Saitama) would be better to play him in live action. Like, the man straight up decided to shave his head so he was bald like Saitama during quarantine.

  6. I’m fine with Henry Golding as one punch man. I’m sure Sony would have done their homework to digitally recreate an image of him as Saitama. I would urge people not to be so “tied-up”to pre-existing actors who has played the role. We must always give others a chance. I’m also okay for whoever is the director because I’m sure Sony, with their connection to Japan, surely they have many anime experts who can act as advisers to the director.

Not a terrible choice, but Alfred Hsing who played Saitama in the Re Anime version is perfect for that role !
Also they should hire the réanime team as they nail the spirit of anime, which is often a huge problem with adaptation. They managed to pull of such a quality video with very little… Sony tend to do the opposite … lot of money for terrible results >_< so they could use some help from anime fans !

  8. No, Alfred Hsing is not suitable. You need a more menacing look to Saitama. Look at “One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows”cover look. Something like Henry in The Gentlemen (Dry Eye).

  9. Am I the only one that will have faith in whoever gets chosen to play Saitama. Guys have faith. Brats. You never know. You could be surprised so. I like any news. As long as the movie is good then I’m fine with whatever

  10. MICHAEL ROSENBAUM AS SAITAMA!

SEE HIS OLD COMEDY MOVIES!–PERFECT Saitama EVERYDAY personality!
SEE HIM AS “LEX” IN SMALLVILLE–
    1. He can play Saitama’s SERIOUS side … PERFECTLY!
    2. His look = Saitama!

    How do we promote this?!!
How do we contact Sony’s OPM production?
NOBODY else could do the role justice!

  11. Reading these comments reminded me of the movie “Arahan”. About a wimpy cop who gains immense power. Funny movie. Ryoo Seung-bum might be a possibility although unfortunate he isnt a doppelgänger for Saitama.
On a side note, there use to be a guy in our I.T. Dept that was a doppelgänger for Saitama. I always wanted to go up to him with a OPM picture and get his autograph but wasnt sure he’d get the joke

  12. Michael Rosenbaum … hands down!
    * His comedic background == Saitama’s everyday, spoofy, lackadaisical sure.
    * His look, as Lex Luthor from Smallville series, including his slim frame.
    * Saitama’s serious moments (see Michael’s portrayal of Lex).
