‘Joker’ Officially Passes ‘Deadpool 2’ To Become Highest-Grossing R-Rated Film Of All-Time

After just 21 days in theaters, Joker has made cinematic history. The controversial film has officially passed Deadpool 2 on its way to becoming the highest-grossing R rated film of all time, worldwide. The film earned $2.4 million on Thursday, bringing its 21-day total to $258 million, domestically. Deadpool 2 star Ryan Reynolds took to Twitter to congratulate the Joker team.
To some, this news was expected. Fans all over the world have publicly regarded the film as the greatest live-action comic book adaptation of all time. However, the film has also been drenched in controversy as the fear of imitators spiked to the point of the United States Army issuing a warning to theaters.

Regardless, the film has earned a record-shattering $788.3 million in the worldwide box office. Additionally, it has broken a bevy of records along the way. Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, touts the highest October opening weekend, highest Thursday previews in October, and highest worldwide launch of all time for October records, among more.
The film is still early in its theatrical run, however. Many insiders have tapped the film to break $1 billion before it is all said and done.
The box office success is unprecedented. However, the critical and professional response has been stellar as well. Mark Hamill, who famously voiced The Joker throughout a plethora of animated Batman projects, tweeted “the awesome Joaquin Phoenix, Todd Phillips & Scott Silver brilliantly reimagine the character as never seen before! 2 thumbs up from that old-school, comic book version… me.”
Journalists, including our own here at Full Circle, have predicted the film to take home copious Academy Awards this spring. While it is currently still unknown, it would be surprising if the film didn’t clean up this awards season.
