Michael Fassbender is hanging up the cape and magnetic helmet for soccer cleats. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 42-year-old actor is in negotiations to star in Next Goal Wins.
Back in 2014, Mike Brett and Steve Jamison made a documentary, Next Goal Wins. The documentary focused on an American Samoa national football team and their coach, Thomas Rongen. The film will see the team attempt to turn around their story as longtime losers as they try to become a FIBA World Cup qualifying team. Fassbender will play the coach while Taika Waititi, best known for Thor: Ragnarok, is on board to direct.
Waititi co-wrote the screenplay with Iain Morris and Brett and Jamison will return to produce the film. Waititi will team up once again with Fox Searchlight to make the film. The 44-year-old filmmaker is currently on a promotion tour for their latest film, Jojo Rabbit. Next Goal Wins will be Waititi’s next project before he moves onto Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The film is expected to arrive in theaters in 2021.
