Originally set to debut later this year, Geoff Johns’ series has been pushed back to a 2020 release. This is most likely due to Titans season two officially premiering this fall. The original character created by Johns is based on his late sister, who was tragically lost in an accident prior to the comic’s debut in 1999. Johns will be at the helm of the series as showrunner, as well as writing the first episode. Bassinger stars as the teenage heroine in the ever-expanding line up of DC heroes on the streaming service, serving as a refreshing addition to any possible future crossovers.
An official synopsis was also revealed during the panel today, which Deadline has reported as the following:
“Stargirl follows high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore as she inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. This new drama reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in an unpredictable series.”
This fresh spin is bound to be what the DC Universe needs within its series. The streaming service reaching further out into characters that are not deemed as “mainstream” by general audiences could very well become lead to small screen hits. It’s also exciting to see a mixture of characters from popular DC animated series (such as the beloved Young Justice) come to life within the DC Universe. Titans has already teased Superboy in the iconic Project Cadmus in its season one finale.
The Justice Society of America has had various incarnations, its members spanning from Doctor Fate, Atom, and even Red Tornado. Though it is still unclear what specific members will be brought to life in this series, the realm of possibilities is sure to up the anticipation with future teasers.
