‘Captain America: Brave New World’: Giancarlo Esposito To Play Sidewinder

During Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, an update on Giancarlo Esposito’s character in Captain America: Brave New World was given. The Breaking Bad star is set to play the King of the Serpent Society, Seth Voelker, aka Sidewinder.

Created by Mark Gruenwald and Ralph Macchio in 1980, the character debuted in Marvel Two-in-One #64. Originally an Economics professor, he was chemically mutated by Roxxon Oil Company. Granted the ability to teleport, he became Sidewinder and would go on to form the Serpent Society, a group of snake-themed criminals.

The first look at Esposito’s character was revealed in the last trailer for the film. However, he doesn’t bear much of a resemblance to his comic book counterpart. It is unknown if maybe he will eventually don the snake-themed costume or if the MCU will go for a more grounded approach with the villain.

Malcolm Spellman, creator and head writer of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, penned the script with Dalan Musson, who served as a staff writer on the show. Nigerian-American filmmaker Julius Onah, best known for his work on 2018’s The Cloverfield Paradox, has been tapped to direct.

Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14, 2025.
