Vanilla Ice is one of the most recognizable voices of the 1990s. His hit song “Ice, Ice Baby” continues to appear in a bevy of films, commercials, and TV shows long after its initial release. During a recent conversation with Insider, Now You See Me star Dave Franco revealed that a biopic focusing on the rapper has long been in development and he will star in the titular role.
Moreover, the actor discusses just how close the film is to its first stages of production. “We have been in development for a while but we are inching closer and closer to preproduction,” Franco said. Per the initial profile, news of the biopic first surfaced in 2019 in a Production Weekly listing, with the working title To The Extreme. The movie will reportedly feature a script written by Chris Goodwin (Major Lazer) and Phillip Van (Bright Falls).
Moreover, Franco revealed that he has actually spent plenty of time on the phone with Vanilla Ice during his coronavirus pandemic quarantine.
“Rob is such a sweet and intelligent guy and he’s been super helpful in the process of getting all the details correct and making us privy to information the public doesn’t know,” Franco said. “Just talking to him I can’t help but think about the rabbit holes I’m going to go down to get ready for the role.”
Vanilla Ice, real name Robert Van Winkle, released his debut album, Hooked, in 1989. From there, the rapper found mainstream success through his hi “Ice Ice Baby”, which was the first hip hop single to top the Billboard charts. In recent years, Ice has embarked on a number of worldwide tours and appeared in several reality shows.
Dave Franco has quickly become one of the most sought-after performers in Hollywood today. Over the last few years, the actor has starred in The Disaster Artist alongside his brother James Franco as well as The Lego Ninjago Movie and 6 Underground. Up next, Franco will direct and star with his wife Allison Brie in the upcoming film The Rental.
