‘BlackAF’ Renewed For Season 2 At Netflix

Netflix is continuing its blossoming partnership with Black-ish creator Kenya Barris. As first reported by Deadline, the streaming service is officially renewing his latest series BlackAF for a second season.

The first season received mixed reviews from critics. Its strong social critiques and one-liners made for an entertaining spin on the formulaic single-camera comedy. Full Circle referred to the series as “captivatingly irreverent and brutally honest” in its season one review.

The filmmaker remains vague when discussing his expectations for the upcoming season in a statement to Deadline. “I won’t really, really, really get into it until we’re in the room because I want it to be fresh, but I definitely know I want to talk about real s***. We want it to be really special.” The series takes inspiration from the real world surrounding it and provides a unique window into the black American experience.

Kenya Barris plays an exaggerated version of himself in the series. The ensemble cast is rounded out by the incomparable Rashida Jones (Parks & Recreation), who plays Kenya’s wife. Additionally, Iman Benson, Genneya Walton, Scarlet Spencer, Justin Clairborne, and Rovi Cabot-Conyers play the couple’s children. Season one also boasts a bevy of cameos from Tyler Perry, Ava DuVernay, Issa Rae, and Lena Waithe, among others, as themselves.
Production will likely begin in 2021 after the effects of the coronavirus pandemic allow work to begin. At this time, no release schedule is set.
