New Line Cinema’s ‘Wizard Of Oz’ Remake A Non-Musical ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Style Reimagining

Fans of The Wizard of Oz may soon see an all-new side of the magical classic. According to insider Daniel Richtman, New Line Cinema’s long-gestating remake is reportedly a non-musical Lord of the Rings style reimagining.
It was first announced in 2021 that The Woodsman director, Nicole Kassell, is set to helm the project. Adapting L. Frank Baum’s classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the feature will be able to draw on elements from the book, such as the ruby slippers, unlike other adaptations.

The project has been described as a non-musical, which makes sense given it will adapt the book and not simply reboot the MGM film. Additionally, since it was referred to as Lord of the Rings style, it seems the project will delve into more of an epic fantasy.
New Line Cinema is also looking to cast a person of color as Dorothy. The actress will join a long list of stars, including Judy Garland and Diana Ross, who have all portrayed the character over the years.
