Callina Liang, Benedict Wong, & Jabari Banks To Star In JC Lee’s English-Language Remake Of ‘Bad Genius’

In recent years, hit films like Parasite and Drive My Car have changed the game in terms of non-English films becoming critical and commercial hits domestically. However, that appears to not stop Hollywood from developing remakes of Asian-led films in English. As first reported by Deadline, Luce director JC Lee has been tapped to direct a remake of the hit Thai film Bad Genius with a stacked cast already on board.
Per the initial report, MCU star Benedict Wong is set to lead the cast of the film alongside the breakout star of Peacock’s Bel-Air Jabari Banks. Moreover, Tell Me Everything star Callina Liang is starring in the remake as well. JC Lee will direct the feature as well as adapt the screenplay into English alongside Julius Onah (Captain America: New World Order).

Bad Genius is a 2017 Thai heist thriller film directed by Nattawut Poonpiriya. Inspired by real-life news of students cheating on the SAT, the film stars Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying as Lynn, a straight-A student who devises an exams-cheating scheme that eventually rises to international levels. In a statement, JC Lee says he is excited to bring the story to a new audience.
“I am so excited to share a new take on what was already a wildly successful and remarkable film,” said Lee. “I can’t wait to work with this fantastic, innovative group of artists, drawing on our diverse array of real-world experiences to make a film as thrilling and fun as the original.
Benedict Wong has become one of the most beloved actors within the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to standout roles in recent films Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as well as a role in the Disney+ series She-Hulk. Up next, Wong will lend his voice to the upcoming animated Netflix film The Magician’s Elephant. Meanwhile, Jabari Banks currently plays a fictionalized version of Will Smith in the Peacock series Bel-Air while Callina Liang is widely touted as one of the brightest stars in movies today thanks to her stellar work in Tell Me Everything. Notably, Bad Genius will be their first roles in a major motion picture.
