Dean DeBlois Reportedly Writing & Directing Live-Action ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ Film

It looks like Universal is planning a return to Berk with a twist. According to insider Daniel Richtman, Dean DeBlois is writing and directing a live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon for the studio.
Originally a successful children’s book series written by Cressida Cowell, the franchise spawned a trilogy of animated feature films from DreamWorks Animation. The story follows a young Viking named Hiccup who wishes to become a dragon slayer and gain the admiration of his village. But after a run-in with a rare Night Fury, he befriends the dragon and finds that Vikings and dragons could be more than enemies.

DeBlois helmed all three films in the original animated trilogy, so it is exciting he will return for the live-action adaptation. As of now, nothing else is known about the film other than it is in the works. The franchise has been praised by audiences and critics alike and even received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature for each of its films.
The last movie in the series, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World released in 2019 and brought the story to a close. It makes sense Universal would wish to start fresh with a new take on the franchise, but for now, fans will have to wait and see what this will look like for the Island of Berk.
