Armie Hammer & Mads Mikkelsen To Star In Amma Asante’s Cold War Thriller ‘The Billion Dollar Spy’

Fresh off the successful Netflix release of his latest feature Rebecca, co-starring Lily James, Armie Hammer continues to flesh out his slate of upcoming projects. As first reported by Variety, Hammer will next team up with accomplished thespian Mads Mikkelsen for a new thriller from The Handmaid’s Tale director Amma Asante.
The film, titled The Billion Dollar Spy, will reportedly be a spy thriller set against the backdrop of the Cold War. Based on true events, Hammer will star in the film as Brad Reid. A new arrival at the Moscow CIA headquarters, he meets a Russian engineer named Adolf Tolkachev, played by Mikkelsen. Despite a host of discouraging remarks and warnings from his higherups, Reid forms a unique friendship with Tolkachev. Fortunately, Reid’s trust in Tolkachev pays off following the retrieval of copious Soviet military secrets, obtained via classic spy tactics. This noble act earns Tolkachev the title “The Billion Dollar Spy” and the effort dramatically shifts the Cold War.

The true story hails from Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David E. Hoffman after years of painstaking research. The events will be adapted for the big screen by Remember scribe Benjamin August. Amma Asante will direct the film with Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend) and Greg Lessans (My Best Friend’s Girl) producing. Finally, HanWay Films will handle the movie’s international distribution with Endeavor Content on-board to launch the picture domestically.
This week continues to be memorable for Armie Hammer. Along with the release of Rebecca, it was revealed that he will co-star with Jennifer Lopez in the action-comedy Shotgun Wedding. Additionally, he will next appear in Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile and Taika Waititi‘s Next Goal Wins. Moreover, Mads Mikkelson last provided voice and motion capture work for the 2019 video game Death Stranding. Up next, the Doctor Strange star will star alongside Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley in Doug Liman’s Chaos Walking.
